Mullein loves to grow on steep dry banks and hillsides, that’s why you often see her at the side of the road. You’ll recognise her by her large silvery grey, soft, furry leaves and a tall stalk reaching upwards, which in summer has little yellow flowers.
In medicine, her leaves are used for poultices to help reset bones and sprains. Traditionally they were smoked as a remedy for lung and bronchial problems. They are also carried as a talisman of safety, helping us on our journey. Mullein flowers look like the curl and temple of an ear and are used as a remedy for ear problems.
I feel that Mullein has a very strong grandmother energy. You can see her with her crown of flower stalks watching over her offspring on the hill below her. She is wise and her energy brings you that wisdom and that ability to speak with a clear voice and listen, really listen to what is being said.
Verbascum Thapsus is her botanical name, verb, yes, she’s a doer. She gets things done. That road thing, those steep hillsides, Mullein looks out over them and in doing so helps us gain some perspective on our situation.
